Apple is preparing to introduce its Apple Intelligence platform in mainland China in December, potentially ending a lengthy delay that has kept the company’s AI features unavailable in one of its most important markets.

According to Bloomberg, the rollout is expected to arrive with the upcoming iOS 27.3 software update. The initial release is expected to bring selected AI capabilities previously introduced on the iPhone, iPad and Mac in other markets. However, the launch is expected to exclude several newer features, including Apple’s redesigned AI-powered Siri assistant.

The delay has been linked to China’s regulatory requirements for generative AI services and the need for Apple to work with domestic technology companies.

Which Apple AI Features Could Launch in China?

The initial version of Apple Intelligence is expected to offer selected features such as writing tools, notification summaries, Genmoji and photo-editing capabilities.

Some features will remain limited or unavailable. The new Siri AI assistant, Apple’s Image Playground image-generation tools and certain text-generation capabilities are not expected to be part of the initial rollout.

This means Chinese users may receive a more limited version of Apple Intelligence than users in some other markets.

Alibaba and Baidu Play Key Roles

To meet local requirements, Apple has worked with Chinese technology companies, including Alibaba and Baidu, on its AI offering.

Alibaba is expected to help provide AI model capabilities and regulatory safeguards, while Apple has also worked with Baidu on features related to search and Siri.

China’s regulatory framework requires AI services to meet local requirements before they can be made available to consumers. Bloomberg reported that Apple’s China-specific arrangements include safeguards developed with Alibaba, allowing Chinese authorities to review ongoing updates to the AI models.

Apple received preliminary approval for Apple Intelligence in July 2026, but additional discussions and permissions were still needed before a consumer launch.

Why the China Launch Matters for Apple

China is a major market for Apple, and the absence of its AI features has left the company at a disadvantage as domestic smartphone manufacturers continue developing AI-powered experiences.

A China launch could help Apple strengthen its competitive position by bringing selected AI tools to local iPhone, iPad and Mac users. However, the limited feature set may affect how compelling the initial release is compared with offerings from local competitors.

The rollout also highlights the challenge global technology companies face when deploying AI services across markets with different regulatory requirements, local partnerships and data governance expectations.

What Happens Next?

Apple’s reported December launch would mark an important step in its efforts to expand Apple Intelligence into mainland China. The initial release is expected to focus on selected existing capabilities, with newer AI features remaining outside the first rollout.

The timing and final feature availability will depend on Apple’s release plans and applicable regulatory clearances.
