Apple is tightening the amount employees can spend on artificial intelligence tools as the technology giant looks to control rising costs while expanding AI adoption across its operations.

According to a Bloomberg report published on November 4, 2026, Apple has reduced daily AI spending allowances for some engineers and is considering further cuts across engineering and other departments. The move highlights the growing challenge technology companies face in balancing AI-driven productivity with the expense of running advanced AI models.

Daily AI Spending Limits Under Review

Bloomberg reported that Apple reduced the daily AI spending cap for some engineers from $300 to $200 in October. Further reductions are being considered, potentially bringing allowances for certain engineering teams down to $100 per day.

Some non-engineering teams already operate with a $100 daily limit, which could fall to as little as $25 for selected groups.

Employees who require higher allowances for their work may request exemptions from senior leadership.

These budgets cover AI tokens, the units of text and other data processed by models when responding to requests. Complex tasks such as software development, coding and debugging can consume significant quantities of tokens.

Employees Use Multiple AI Platforms

Apple employees have access to several AI services, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini.

The company is reportedly encouraging some teams to use less expensive models or AI systems that run locally on devices to reduce usage costs.

Employee reactions to the restrictions have reportedly been mixed. While some workers believe the previous allowances were higher than necessary, others view the reductions as part of broader cost-control measures.

Apple declined to comment on the reported changes.

Rising AI Costs Add Pressure

The spending restrictions come as Apple's overall research and development expenses continue to increase.

The company reported that research and development spending rose 32% in fiscal 2026, partly driven by higher infrastructure and AI costs. Companywide operating expenses increased 22% to $75.5 billion.

Apple is therefore facing a balancing act: encouraging employees to integrate AI into everyday work while ensuring the technology delivers sufficient productivity benefits to justify its costs.

A Wider Shift in Enterprise AI Spending

Apple's decision reflects a broader trend across the technology industry. Companies that initially encouraged widespread experimentation with AI are increasingly reviewing usage, model costs and measurable returns.

The challenge for businesses is to identify where AI creates genuine value without restricting employees who rely on these tools for complex tasks.

As enterprise AI adoption expands, cost management, efficient model selection and productivity measurement are likely to become essential parts of corporate AI strategies.
