Missed Calls Are Costing SMBs Thousands of Dollars Annually, Finds New Survey From Vida

A new nationwide survey from AI voice solutions company Vida reveals that small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) are losing significant revenue due to missed customer calls, while early adopters of AI-powered voice agents are reaping the benefits through improved revenue, stronger customer engagement, and enhanced market positioning.

The first-ever SMB AI Voice Agent Adoption & Impact Survey, conducted by Vida, highlights that SMBs positioning themselves as industry leaders are more likely to implement AI voice agents, especially for managing inbound sales and handling customer queries. Despite this, adoption remains inconsistent, hindered by concerns over customer preferences and implementation complexity.

“SMBs are missing more than calls – they’re missing revenue,” said Lyle Pratt, CEO and Founder of Vida. “Our survey shows that AI voice agents aren’t just a tech trend, they’re a strategic advantage. Businesses using them are seeing real gains, and we expect adoption to rise quickly as more SMBs recognize the opportunity and understand the real-world use cases.”

Key Findings

State of the Industry

  • Only 22% of SMBs currently utilize AI voice agents, while 31% plan to invest in them over the next 12–24 months.

ROI of SMBs Using AI Voice Agents

  • 97% report increased revenue.
  • 82% say customer engagement has improved, helping reduce missed calls and capture more sales opportunities.
  • 80% save at least five hours per week, enabling focus on higher-value activities.

Clear Leader Advantage

  • 69% of SMBs identifying as industry leaders already use AI voice agents for customer support or sales.
  • 49% have deeply integrated AI into their daily operations.

The Hidden Cost of Missed Calls

  • 42% estimate losses of over $500 monthly—or $6,000 annually—from missed customer calls.
  • 50% cite broader operational impacts from missed communications.
  • 55% receive between 10 and 100+ customer calls each day.

AI Voice Agent Use Cases

  • Top applications include handling inbound sales inquiries (31%) and answering FAQs (20%).
  • Only 7% use them for customer support escalation, revealing untapped potential.

Barriers to Adoption

  • Top concerns include customer preference for human interaction and perceived complexity of implementation.
  • 61% of SMBs feel only somewhat or not at all confident in their ability to implement new technologies.

Despite these concerns, most SMBs believe they are keeping pace technologically with their peers. However, confidence in actual implementation tells a different story, with a majority feeling underprepared to integrate tools like AI voice agents.

“There’s clearly a gap between perceived tech-savviness and actual readiness to adopt these tools,” Pratt added. “While SMBs recognize the value of emerging technologies, they often lack the resources or expertise to effectively put them into practice. We want to help bridge the gap with solutions that are easy to implement and deliver ROI fast.”

The survey, conducted in partnership with SurveyMonkey in March 2025, polled 320 SMB owners and managers across various industries. With a margin of error of ±5%, the results provide statistically significant insight into the opportunities and challenges surrounding AI adoption in the SMB sector.
