Reliance Jio’s cloud-based computer service, JioPC, lets users run a virtual desktop on an existing laptop or desktop through a web browser. The computing happens on Jio’s servers rather than on the user’s machine.
How it works
Users open the JioPC site on an existing computer with a supported browser and an internet connection, then pick a plan. The processor, memory and storage sit in Jio’s cloud, and the local device only handles input and display. The same desktop, files and settings also appear on a TV when it’s connected to a Jio Set-Top Box with a keyboard and mouse. That route needs Jio broadband. The browser route works on any provider’s connection.
Specs and plans
Plan | Specs | 2 months | 5 months | 10+2 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
JioPC | 4 CPUs, 8GB RAM, 500GB storage | ₹1,000 | ₹2,000 | ₹4,000 |
JioPC Ultra | 8 CPUs, 16GB RAM, 1TB storage | ₹1,200 | ₹2,500 | ₹5,000 |
The “10+2” plan gives 12 months of access for the price of 10. One report notes that some prices shown on Jio’s own website differ from those reported, so check the current rate before buying.
Limits
The desktop runs Ubuntu Linux, not Windows.
It needs an internet connection and doesn’t work offline.
It doesn’t make your own device faster. Its processor and RAM stay the same, and the extra resources are cloud-hosted.
It is available only in India.
Data lives in the cloud, so losing or damaging your device doesn’t delete your files.
